How do you repaint a two story home around a pool?
Mostly planning where the ladders go and protecting the water. Painting next to a pool is slower than painting next to a lawn.
This Daytona Beach home has a covered second floor balcony, tall flat stucco walls and big sliding glass doors that open straight onto a travertine pool deck. Ladders cannot sit on a wet or uneven deck edge, and paint that drips into a pool is a problem for the owner. So the deck gets covered, the ladders are set on solid footing away from the coping, and the tall walls are worked from the top down.
The finish here is a clean white body with dark window frames, which is a common look on newer homes near the coast. White shows every drip and roller mark, so the coats have to be even. You can read more about coatings for the deck itself on our pool deck painting page.

Is it worth painting a garage door and trim on their own?
Yes, if the walls are in decent shape. A garage door can be a big share of what you see from the street, so repainting it and the trim around it changes a lot for a small job.
This two car door was painted to match the pale house color, along with the frame around the opening. The photo was taken right after the last coat, and you can still see the masking paper laid over the driveway pavers. That paper stays down until the paint is dry enough that nothing gets tracked onto the brick.
Metal garage doors need a clean, dull surface before paint. They are washed, lightly scuffed and spot primed where there is any rust. Raised panel doors also take longer than flat ones, because every panel edge has to be brushed so paint does not pool. We cover jobs like this under trim and door painting.

How do painters protect a kitchen during an interior repaint?
They cover everything that is not being painted before a brush comes out. In this New Smyrna Beach home that meant plastic sheeting over the kitchen cabinets and the table, and tape along the floor.
The walls were painted a bright blue, with the white chair rail and a white doorway kept as they were. The photo was taken after the walls were finished but before the masking came down. That is why the cabinets on the right are still behind plastic and the blue tape is still on the cabinet tops. The next step is peeling it all back and touching up the edges.
A strong blue like this usually needs an extra coat to look even, especially over a lighter old color. That changes the day count, so it is worth knowing before you get estimates. More on how we run these jobs is on our interior painting page.

What gets covered before a lanai is painted?
The floor, the glass and the door frames. A lanai is outdoor space, but it has more finished surfaces packed into it than most exterior walls.
This photo shows a covered lanai in Daytona Beach at the prep stage. Canvas drop cloths are spread over the stained concrete floor, and every window and door frame is masked with blue tape. Tools are staged at the edge. Nothing has been painted yet, and the frames stay taped until the last coat is dry.
Canvas is used on floors instead of plastic because it does not get slippery underfoot, and it soaks up small drips instead of spreading them. The ceiling and walls in a lanai also stay damp longer than the outside of the house, so mildew is common. It has to be washed off and the surface allowed to dry before paint goes on, or the new coat will peel.

Can an old tub and tile be refinished instead of replaced?
Usually, if the tub is solid and the tile is still well attached. Refinishing costs far less than tearing out a tub, and the room is usable sooner.
This New Smyrna Beach bathroom is shown mid job. The tub has been coated, the floor is covered with paper and drop cloth, and the tile walls are being refinished in a light grey. The tub spout and shower valve are left in place and worked around.
The prep is what makes refinishing last. The old surface has to be cleaned of soap residue, repaired where it is chipped, and etched or sanded so the new coating can bond. Ventilation matters too, because refinishing products need air moving while they go on and while they cure. Plan on a short wait before using the tub, and we will tell you how long. What does kitchen prep look like before cabinets are painted?
It looks like this: plastic and paper over almost everything. Prep is most of a cabinet job, and it starts before any sanding.
In this Ormond Beach kitchen, the upper cabinets are wrapped in plastic sheeting, the wall and backsplash are covered, and brown masking paper is taped along the counter edge and down the side of the stove. The floor is left clear in this shot so the crew can move around. It is a working kitchen, so the goal is to keep dust and spray off every surface that is not getting a finish.
After masking, cabinet surfaces are cleaned of grease, sanded and primed with a bonding primer before the finish coats. Grease is the enemy here. Paint will not grip a kitchen cabinet that has years of cooking film on it, no matter how good the product is. The full process is on our cabinet painting page.
