How Long Does an Exterior Repaint Take? A Day-by-Day Breakdown

If you are planning to repaint your home's exterior in the Daytona Beach or Port Orange area, the honest answer is three to five days for most houses. Some go faster, some take longer. Weather matters. The condition of your existing paint matters. The size of your home matters.

Here is exactly what those days look like on a typical Florida stucco house when the residential painting team from Color Masters Painting is on the job.

Day 1: Pressure Washing and Full Inspection

We do not pick up a brush on day one. We pressure wash the entire exterior to pull off dirt, mildew, and any paint that was already starting to let go. We also walk the whole house while we are washing and flag anything that needs attention before paint goes on: cracks in the stucco, rusted nail heads, soft wood around windows or soffits, caulk that has dried out and pulled away from the frame.

Skipping this step is how you end up repainting in three years instead of ten. The pressure washer is not the glamorous part of the job, but it is where the durability starts.

Day 2: Prep Work, Caulking, Priming, and Masking

Once everything has had at least 24 hours to dry, prep begins in earnest. We seal stucco cracks with elastomeric patching compound, scrape any loose paint the washer left behind, caulk around windows and doors, spot-prime bare areas, and mask off anything that should not get painted. Shutters, light fixtures, landscaping around the foundation.

On chalky or aged surfaces, we apply Sherwin-Williams Loxon Conditioner before any topcoat. This matters a lot in Florida. Old stucco can be porous and chalky, and if you put paint on top of that without conditioning the surface first, the paint does not bond properly and it will peel ahead of schedule.

Days 3 and 4: Painting

This is where the house starts to look like a job well done. We spray the stucco for a smooth, even finish and backroll it to work the paint into the surface properly. Backrolling on stucco is not optional, it is how you avoid thin spots and coverage failures that show up six months later.

Trim, fascia, soffits, doors, and any accent areas get done during these days too. Doors typically get sprayed for a clean factory-style finish. Most jobs get two coats of Sherwin-Williams Duration or Emerald Rain Refresh, depending on what the surface needs. One coat sometimes works on a same-color refresh over a sound existing paint job, but color changes and new surfaces always get two.

Day 5: Details, Cleanup, and Walkthrough

The last day is finishing touches, pulling masking, and doing a walkthrough together. We want you to see the whole thing before we pack up. If something does not look right, we handle it before we leave. That is the only way a job ends.

What Can Change the Timeline?

Afternoon storms are a real factor from June through September. If we cannot paint in the afternoon, the schedule stretches. A house with a lot of deferred maintenance takes longer in the prep phase. A very large home might add a day.

What we do not do is rush prep to keep the schedule. The prep is the job. The paint is just what you see.
